Wildlife Artist: Chris Cockburn

Chris spent his formative years in Sheffield, Worksop (N. Notts.) and Doncaster, where, as well as enjoying art, he developed a lifelong love of all aspects of Natural History. He studied Zoology at Imperial College, London, where he was awarded grants to take part in scientific expeditions to the Ruwenzori mountains, Uganda and the Gombak Forest, Malaysia. Chris later retrained as a biochemist and worked in medical research for about 15 years in London, North Carolina, and Cambridge. In between research contracts he would generally go off to some remote part of the world, observing the natural environments and their fauna and flora.

In mid-life, Chris reinvented himself as an artist, after doing a Foundation Course in Art and Design at the 'City Lit' London. All his work reflects his love of nature, and he has been fortunate to observe much of his subject matter at first hand.

“Colour is my signature, as I not only try to show a little of how each creature either blends into or contrasts with its environment, but also its sheer beauty. I have done over 170 zoological prints in an attempt to capture the range and diversity of the animal kingdom.”

Chris's work is highly individual, due at least in part to his use of a delicate combination of cutting and caustic soda etching. His long term aim is to write a book, using his prints as illustrations.
