Hobo Charles

RichHARD HoffMAN, 2021

Acrylic & ink on paper, framed

W31 x H36 x D6cm frame; W4 x H5cm image

RichHARD created the The Subversive Post Office as a concept to offer a highly collectible series of miniature art through subtle provocation. Using genuine postage stamps, he hand-paints each piece to hint at a story and commentary on a wide range of issues. The power of the work plays with the Establishment and iconic popular culture in a post urban fine art format.

This work, Hobo Charles, explores the similarities of the Hobo Clown, Emmett Leo Kelly and the Prince of Wales, Charles. It hints at a more sympathetic view of Charles as a downtrodden and weary member of the British royal family beyond the much-maligned image of a court jester. The artwork is painted on a 2018 Jersey stamp celebrating Prince Charles' 70th birthday and is set appropriately in a gilded antique gold wood frame.
