DS takes the art of stencilling to extraordinary levels of detail without losing depth or vibrancy of colours. This work is achieved through spray-painting over multi layered hand cut stencils on wood. The work is presented unglazed in a stylish black with silver trim frame. DS frequently juxtaposes seemingly opposing principles and in this case the grenade series is a statement on weapons of life, love and beauty, as opposed to destruction and war.

Artist: DS

David Schmidt aka 'DS’ is an American artist, based and bred in the UK. As a teenager, he started doing art in the streets of East London where the graffiti art movement was taking off. The street art bug stuck and upon finishing his university studies in fine art, DS focused on taking his street art to the next level by developing his stencil art using multiple layers to create polychromatic works.

DS describes his intoxicating artistic style as “the love-child” of graffiti and political activism. His work tries to find the perfect balance between art, activism and humour in the most beautifully chaotic way possible, incorporating the innocence of cherubs harking back to the Renaissance “putti”, with the modern-day plagued destruction of war machines and weapons.

DS has been commissioned by corporate companies such as Innocent Smoothies, Evisu Jeans, and has sold art in Harrods though luxury games maker Purling London. He painted MG Motors’ first official art car revealed for London Design Week in 2019. He is also highly sought for mural commissions including a feature wall in The Huffington Post MD’s office, and 3 elevator shafts in Supercity Aparthotels spanning 6 stories and using 200 meters worth of hand cut stencils!
