Hypatia Mapping The Stars

Chloe McCarrick, 2021

3D map folded Cyanotype

Framed: W25 x H25 x D4

This artwork was inspired by respected academic and tragic heroine Hypatia. One of the last great thinkers of ancient Alexandria, she was one of the first women to study and teach mathematics, philosophy and astronomy. Widely known for her love of learning and public speaking, her reputation as a great female scholar, honoured astronomer and prominent thinker, transformed Hypatia into a feminist icon and empowering role model for female intellectuals in modern times.

Hypatia Mapping The Stars was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, a photogram of a wasp nest combined with hand-painted chemigrams creating planetary structures. After coating the origami map folded handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negative is then contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The print is then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once dried the piece is then Turkish map folded again and framed as a 3D deconstructed origami object.

The image is printed on handmade recycled cotton rag paper, float mounted above a snow-white 8001 mount board in a white frame to showcase the paper texture and deckled edging. All frames come with gallery spec, 3mm thick Artglass AR70 / 3mm anti-reflective/ 79% UV protected glazing as standard. Please enquire if you require a bespoke frame made in alternative colours, gilding and glazing options.

Photographer Chloe McCarrickArtist: Chloe McCarrick

Chloe McCarrick is a renown fine art photographer and mixed-media printmaker. Best known for her circular cyanotypes and still life photography of feathers, she embraces and develops innovative ways of reworking photographic images through collage and mixed-media print techniques, and by blending science, darkroom alchemy and art. Her work explores the boundless possibilities of image production in the age of modern printmaking with an aim to reinvent, recycle, redefine, experiment and preserve.

Female empowerment, natural history and science are recurring themes across Chloe's work. She constructs visual narratives from the lives of extraordinary, trailblazing women - celebrating their achievements, uncovering their struggles and telling the stories of these often unsung heroes. By creating an army of heroes/sheroes, she is attempting to give them a voice, to transform their stories into symbolic pictorial form and in turn hoping these protagonists' positive message inspires others.

"I hope people are empowered by the story behind each piece and that the subject matter ignites imaginations and a curiosity to delve deeper. The key emotion is to feel connected - connected to the story, the techniques and the science behind the work, and to be connected to the elements of nature I introduce to explore human experience and the relationship between each of us, and the world we live in

Chloe exhibits internationally and her work is collected around the world.
