Between the Moths and the Stars (Study in 3D)

This multi-layered cyanotype was inspired by Cecilia Helena Payne-Gaposchkin, a pioneering astrophysicist and probably the most eminent women astronomers of all time. Payne’s discovery deriving true cosmic abundance of elements from stellar spectra profoundly changed what we know about the universe, and her work began a revolution in astrophysics.

Between The Moths And The Stars was created by constructing a hand-cut collage of female photographic portraiture, photographs of spiral staircases, antique metronomes and telescopes with photograms of antique slides of interstellar clouds and star spectra with hand-printed surface textures from chemigrams. After coating the handmade papers with light-sensitive chemistry, they are left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negatives are then contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The prints are then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution and hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours and then hand finished with 24-carat gold leaf. Once dried the pieces are hand cut and made into a 3-dimensional, multi layered collage.

The image is printed on handmade recycled cotton rag paper, float mounted above a snow-white 8001 mount board in a white frame to showcase the paper texture and deckled edging. All frames come with gallery spec, 3mm thick Artglass AR70 / 3mm anti-reflective/ 79% UV protected glazing as standard. Artist: Chloe McCarrick

Chloe McCarrick is a renown fine art photographer and mixed-media printmaker. Best known for her circular cyanotypes and still life photography of feathers, she embraces and develops innovative ways of reworking photographic images through collage and mixed-media print techniques, and by blending science, darkroom alchemy and art. Her work explores the boundless possibilities of image production in the age of modern printmaking with an aim to reinvent, recycle, redefine, experiment and preserve.

Female empowerment, natural history and science are recurring themes across Chloe's work. She constructs visual narratives from the lives of extraordinary, trailblazing women - celebrating their achievements, uncovering their struggles and telling the stories of these often unsung heroes. By creating an army of heroes/sheroes, she is attempting to give them a voice, to transform their stories into symbolic pictorial form and in turn hoping these protagonists' positive message inspires others.
