Circular Nobel Marie (No8)
Chloe McCarrick, 2021
Cyanotype with copper leaf
Print size: W30 x H30; Framed: W38 x H38 x D3
This artwork was inspired by Polish-born physicist, chemist and a pioneer in the study of radiation, Marie Curie. She was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize and is the only person, male or female, to receive two Nobel Prizes in different scientific fields. Through her legendary achievements in science and an obsessive dedication to her work, Curie set a shining example for future generations of researchers. This chemical heroine was indeed one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century.
This work was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, photograms made from antique slides of microscopic cells, and a Blue Morpho butterfly. After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negative is then contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The print is then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once the image is fixed it is hand finished with chemical washed and heat treated copper leaf, producing a variated patina of rich golds, turquoise and green tones.
The image is printed on handmade recycled cotton rag paper, float mounted above a snow-white 8001 mount board in a black frame to showcase the paper texture and deckled edging. All frames come with gallery spec, 3mm thick Artglass AR70 / 3mm anti-reflective/ 79% UV protected glazing as standard. Please enquire if you require a white or bespoke frame made in alternative colours, gilding and glazing options.

Chloe McCarrick is a renown fine art photographer and mixed-media printmaker. Best known for her circular cyanotypes and still life photography of feathers, she embraces and develops innovative ways of reworking photographic images through collage and mixed-media print techniques, and by blending science, darkroom alchemy and art. Her work explores the boundless possibilities of image production in the age of modern printmaking with an aim to reinvent, recycle, redefine, experiment and preserve.
Female empowerment, natural history and science are recurring themes across Chloe's work. She constructs visual narratives from the lives of extraordinary, trailblazing women - celebrating their achievements, uncovering their struggles and telling the stories of these often unsung heroes. By creating an army of heroes/sheroes, she is attempting to give them a voice, to transform their stories into symbolic pictorial form and in turn hoping these protagonists' positive message inspires others.
"I hope people are empowered by the story behind each piece and that the subject matter ignites imaginations and a curiosity to delve deeper. The key emotion is to feel connected - connected to the story, the techniques and the science behind the work, and to be connected to the elements of nature I introduce to explore human experience and the relationship between each of us, and the world we live in
Chloe exhibits internationally and her work is collected around the world.
