Electric Blue
Hermione Carline, 2020
Oil on board
W70 x H80 x D4 cm
The Mountain River paintings are inspired by Hermione’s travels in the Far East. She is aiming to capture the memory and magic she felt when seeing this landscape for the first time. Although the shapes and forms of the mountains are abstracted, the depiction and fine edges to the mountains are derived directly from the drawings she made at the time that she was there.
Hermione uses colour in a transformative way to alter the mood of a painting, to create atmosphere and feeling, and in Electric Blue, Hermione is expressing a sense of mystery and excitement about the unknown. Colours are layered together using both translucence and opacity enabling the viewer to see right through these mountains as though present.
Hermione paints directly in multilayers of oil onto a birch plywood box panel. The sides are 3.8mm deep and she brushes the sides using an ‘ombre’ technique to reflect the mood and colour in the painting itself. As seen from different angles, the painting takes on a sculptural form and is best hung directly on the wall without a frame.

Artist: Hermione Carline
Hermione Carline is a mixed media artist born in Hampstead to a family of artists, the Carlines and Spencers. Exploring themes of light and shadow, translucence and opacity through her paintings, drawings and prints, she imbues her work with an immersive and atmospheric quality creating pieces that are often abstract but firmly rooted in the material world.
Carline studied painting at Camberwell School of Art followed by an MA in textiles at the Royal College of Art. She then worked as a textile designer, co-founding the design studio, The Collection, where her clients included Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren. Returning to fine art more recently, much of her current work has been informed by her earlier experiences in design and interiors.
She has shown regularly in group shows with Gallery Elena Shchukina, Mayfair, with The accessible Art Fair, The Museum of Modern Art, Brussels and is a regular exhibitor with The Other Art Fair.
