Wide River
Hermione Carline, 2019
Oil on board
W30 x H30 x D4 cm
Following a trip to China in 2018, Hermione created a new series of work inspired by the limestone mountains rising out of the Li and Yulong rivers in the south west of the country. These pictures are transformed as a series of overlapping snapshots of reflections or mountain landscapes. Although dreamlike, the shapes of the mountains are derived accurately from drawings made at the time.
In Wide River the eye is drawn to the magical colour of the water and the tonal grey mountains in the distance. Hermione is viewing this world as though she is still and the mountains themselves are moving. It is like a moving landscape where each mountain is overlaid with another mountain, as though she is seeing right through them into the distance. She is painting an actual journey, creating the perception of a video as a still image that is never quite fixed in one place.
Hermione paints directly in multilayers of oil onto a birch plywood box panel. The sides are 3.8mm deep and she brushes the sides using an ‘ombre’ technique to reflect the mood and colour in the painting itself. As seen from different angles, the painting takes on a sculptural form.

Artist: Hermione Carline
Hermione Carline is a mixed media artist born in Hampstead to a family of artists, the Carlines and Spencers. Exploring themes of light and shadow, translucence and opacity through her paintings, drawings and prints, she imbues her work with an immersive and atmospheric quality creating pieces that are often abstract but firmly rooted in the material world.
Carline studied painting at Camberwell School of Art followed by an MA in textiles at the Royal College of Art. She then worked as a textile designer, co-founding the design studio, The Collection, where her clients included Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren. Returning to fine art more recently, much of her current work has been informed by her earlier experiences in design and interiors.
She has shown regularly in group shows with Gallery Elena Shchukina, Mayfair, with The accessible Art Fair, The Museum of Modern Art, Brussels and is a regular exhibitor with The Other Art Fair.
