    Blue Mountain

    Hermione Carline, 2018

    Oil on board

    W30 x H30 x D4 cm

Following a trip to China in 2018, Hermione created a new series of work inspired by the limestone mountains rising out of the Li and Yulong rivers in the south of the country. She explores the themes of light and shadow, translucence and opacity, while imbuing her work with an immersive and atmospheric quality that captures the memory and feeling of places she visited. In this way she creates pieces that are often abstracted but firmly rooted in the material world.

In Blue Mountain in the still dreamlike landscape, Hermone is thinking about a journey along this meandering river that passes through the mountains and beyond. It is both a real depiction as taken directly from drawings she made, but equally can be an imaginary place.

Hermione paints directly onto a birch plywood box panel. The sides are 3.8cm deep and the sides are brushed using an ‘ombre’ technique to reflect the mood and colour in the painting itself. As seen from different angles, the painting takes on a sculptural form.

    Hermione CarlineArtist: Hermione Carline

Hermione Carline is a mixed media artist born in Hampstead to a family of artists, the Carlines and Spencers. Exploring themes of light and shadow, translucence and opacity through her paintings, drawings and prints, she imbues her work with an immersive and atmospheric quality creating pieces that are often abstract but firmly rooted in the material world.

Carline studied painting at Camberwell School of Art followed by an MA in textiles at the Royal College of Art. She then worked as a textile designer, co-founding the design studio, The Collection, where her clients included Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren. Returning to fine art more recently, much of her current work has been informed by her earlier experiences in design and interiors

She has shown regularly in group shows with Gallery Elena Shchukina, Mayfair, with The accessible Art Fair, The Museum of Modern Art, Brussels and is a regular exhibitor with The Other Art Fair.
