Dani uses the imagery of fruit in much of her work as she is interested in their metaphorical and symbolic use in both the visual arts, literature and mythology. The use of traditional painting techniques and strong chiaroscuro create drama. Importantly there is also humour and a quirky 'renaissance' feel running through her work – influences from 15th & 16th century Flemish painters are never far away.

Artist: Dani Humberstone

Born in London, Dani attended a Rudolph Steiner School before studying fashion in Brighton. She returned to her original love of painting and drawing, freelancing for many years an artist before setting up a publishing company where she worked as the principle artist and designer. After several years she left publishing and turned to painting full time.

In 2001 Dani opened The Art Shop, a studio, art shop and creative 'hub' in Wadhurst, East Sussex where until recently she also chaired The September Art Exhibition. She has exhibited all across the UK and Europe including twice at the Florence Biennale. Dani is the vice-president of The Society of Women Artists and has also written several books on painting for Search Press Ltd.

“I aspire to fuse the still-life tradition of Vanitas painting within a contemporary context, using both familiar objects and ideas. As a painter I can tear the visual curtain to reveal a microscopic world within worlds. I like to use layered memories and include personal objects, which ultimately make the work almost like a portraiture.”
