Artist: Ursula Kellett
Ursula has always been fascinated by the confrontation between urban and natural landscapes – the contrast between the gritty, commercialised streets of her hometown London and the lush greenery of its wild spaces and heaths. Her travels, too, have taken her from the shanty towns of Rio to Brazil’s humid rain forests, from the bleached city of Albuquerque to the endless desert of surrounding New Mexico.
The materials she uses reflect these conflicting elements – sand, earth and natural pigments versus man-made varnishes, plastics and metal. In bringing them together, her work mirrors our experience of contemporary city life, the abrasive but also beautiful vibrations of modern living.
