St George's Wharf
Hermione Carline, 2021
Oil on wood panel
W30 x H30 x D4cm
This new series of paintings has been inspired by walks along the Thames footpaths during the lockdown. These walks became a regular feature of Hermione’s life during this time, discovering parts of London she’d never been to on foot before and enabling her to see her home city in new and exciting ways. Somehow the city seemed more ‘joined up’ to her as she walked through different areas, often starting on one bank and then returning on the other.
In St George’s Wharf, Hermione observes this riverside development in Vauxhall, Lambeth, as a series of abstracted shapes reflected almost perfectly in The Thames below.
Hermione paints directly in multilayers of oil on a birch plywood box panel. She brushes the sides in a colour gradient to reflect the mood of the painting itself. As seen from different angles, the painting takes on a sculptural form and the picture can be hung framed or unframed.

Artist: Hermione Carline
Hermione Carline is a mixed media artist born in Hampstead to a family of artists, the Carlines and Spencers. Exploring themes of light and shadow, translucence and opacity through her paintings, drawings and prints, she imbues her work with an immersive and atmospheric quality creating pieces that are often abstract but firmly rooted in the material world.
Carline studied painting at Camberwell School of Art followed by an MA in textiles at the Royal College of Art. She then worked as a textile designer, co-founding the design studio, The Collection, where her clients included Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren. Returning to fine art more recently, much of her current work has been informed by her earlier experiences in design and interiors.
She has shown regularly in group shows with Gallery Elena Shchukina, Mayfair, with The accessible Art Fair, The Museum of Modern Art, Brussels and is a regular exhibitor with The Other Art Fair.
