From humble beginnings copying comics in the playground in Tilbury Essex, Damilola's art has evolved as he has become successful in web design, graphic design, dance, fashion, illustration, and fine art. Since moving to London, the city buzz provides him with ‘ammunition’ for his art. Damilola is very prolific and produces his art straight to paper from images in his head. Quirky and exquisite detailed are the hallmarks of his signature artworks. Tiger is part of his drawing collection on the deconstruction of animals.
Artist: Damilola Odusote
A success story verging on the mythological, Damilola was born to Nigerian parents, and fostered by a Romanian couple in Tilbury, Essex, a town which at a time was known for high levels of unemployment, poverty, crime and racism, a zeitgeist bleakly captured in the BAFTA-winning feature film Fish Tank. This adverse environment seems to have brought out the best in the family, which includes a poet, a lawyer, and the Hollywood actor Adewale Akinnouye Agbaje, best known for his roles in Lost and The Bourne Identity. And now, of course, we must add the up-and-coming talent, Damilola Odusote.
As a dancer, he has worked under megastars the likes of Mariah Cary, Sade and Plan B, and consequently with T4, Nike, Nokia, the BBC and Sky. As an illustrator his client base includes the Secretary of the British Egyptian Society, the Earl of Bute and The Brewery. As an artist, using a bold black pen with no corrections, he creates work which has been displayed worldwide, and has created a client base throughout Europe and America. His art has since become more political, and he constantly draws on politics and race for inspiration, while also being influenced by fiction.
Damilola has exhibited all over London – Dolphin Square, Pimlico, the Flash Gallery, Soho, Cultivate, Vyner Street, and many others. He also receives regular commissions, particularly for his portraits of celebrities, who have included Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon and Amy Winehouse. He graduated from the Camberwell College of Arts in 2006, after tragedy took the lives of both his foster parents.
