Polar Express

Mat Kemp, 2018

Mixed Media

Size: W30 x H30 x D7

Mat's varied practice utilises found objects, industrial materials and more traditional mediums such cast bronze, plaster and resin. For this work, he has used old toys and sand/ballast harvested from the Thames foreshore at low tide.

Polar Express is part of Mat's Concrete Jungle series of works highlighting the need for the conservation of endangered species staring at extinction caused by the concrete jungles of human civilisation. The titles of the works are related to contemporary culture that are meant to trigger responses from various generations.

This is a theme close to Mat's heart and part of the proceeds of the sale of these works will be donated to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Artist Mat KempArtist: Mat Kemp

Mat Kemp is a Yorkshire-born artist currently living, working and exhibiting in London and New York. His sculptures and reliefs combine found and rejected objects with traditional and non-traditional materials. His pieces demonstrate a sense of humour and charm that he considers to be an essential ingredient of life and work. He makes sculptural pieces that reinterpret familiar subjects and materials. He challenges us to examine the visual symbols and incidental forms that we take for granted as we move through our everyday lives, jolting us out of the world we know to somewhere slightly removed from reality.

Mat has degrees from Newcastle University (Fine Art), The Royal College of Art (Bronze Casting) and the Instituto Statale D'Art Florence (Sculpture)
